Designed by the Gilbert (who was the first incumbent), this rather expressive brass memorial reflects the confidence of the Victorian age with it's mastery of the art of brass work and the sheer exuberance and eclectic nature of the fonts used. Once again it is full of Masonic symbolism.

It is hard to see the cross braces which take the support of the roof - the long exposure reveals intricate carving in floral motifs. This is a photo of each support to the hammerbeam looking upwards

I AM THE....

Must be viewed large to appreciate the detail

This is one of the most unusual reredos' I have photographed. It was designed by the first incumbent, the Rev E W Gilbert. Intertwined with the vine are the words 'I am the' - see them?

A friend of mine David Morris has sent in this wonderful explanation about this work of art:-

The complete quote is from John 15 verse 5 "I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing". There is also a wider context of Christ being the "true vine" (John 15 1-17). The most important word, "vine", however is rendered unnecessary by the sculpture, suggesting the power of art to communicate truth, a theme of the time.

Notice how the introductory words "I am the" are carefully hidden amongst the vine leaves and branches. The words "I Am" in Hebrew are the name for God, which Christ used with regard to himself on several occasions, including the vine quote - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_am_that_I_am . In the context of the 1870s, when a combination of Darwinism and Ruskinism had led to the celebration of nature in art (such as this), I think there is a deeper meaning which says "I Am" (or God) is behind, or part and parcel, of all nature if only one has "eyes to see" through the physical representation.

Hey, I'm sure that I have put this pic up before, but I LOVE IT! It has a wonderful symbolism to it. Taken at the remarkable Isola di San Michele - it is the burial ground of Venetians. I took it with my Bronica ETRSi 645 medium format camera - which I miss sorely. I miss the mechanical clunk and geared feel of the film winder. I miss putting 645 film into the back on a windy day. I miss its bulk, weight and feel.

Great to see a contemporary slant on this Gargoyle at Chichester Cathedral UK. It just goes to show that the organic tradition of cathedral building is alive and well and that the C20th is well represented!

Yup, I did some post processing here - but I deliberately wanted to create an atmosphere.The cathedral was shrouded in fog and there was a strong backlighting from a street light. I was heavily influenced by the b&w film Nosferatu and this image fits the bill!
