The Golden Section

The Golden Section self evident in organ steps at St. Mary's Studley Yorkshire UK

Proportion, space and scale are an important factor in many buildings, and the most successful of them are a balanced mixture of all three elements. Several theories of proportion exist to illustrate how the implicit form of architecture can affect our senses by creating a meniscus of tension. Interestingly, the principles involved with most systems are similar, perhaps hinting at an innate value system of proportion in all of us, across all cultures.

The best known of these systems is the Golden Section, which is based upon a Pythagorean theory of ratio. The Collin's Dictionary describes the Golden Section as ' the proportion of the two divisions of a straight line such that the smaller is to the larger as the larger is to the sum of the two'

The Golden Section is self evident in the Parthenon

Even in the C20th Le Corbusier developed his own modular system which is based upon the Golden Mean. Summerson in his brilliant book Architecture in Britain 1530-1830 - says his work 'is so successful as a modern form of architecture because it holds within its genius loci the strings of form which link it tothe buildings of a past tradition'

Space

David Chapel Llandaff Cathedral Wales, George Pace

'We put thirty spokes together and call it a wheel; But it is on the space where there is nothing that the utility of the wheel depends. We turn clay to make a vessel; But it is on the space where there is nothing that the utility of the vessel depends. We pierce doors and windows to make a house; and it is on these spaces where there is nothing that the utility of the house depends. Therefore, just as we take advantage of what is, we should recognise the utility of what is not.'

Lao-tzu, Tao Te Ching C6th BC

ARCHITECTURE WEEK: ARCHI-MAPS

Architecture week is celebrating its 10th birthday, and what better way to celebrate the event than checking out one of my archi-maps.

Archi-maps are based upon google earth (the free dowload) and provide a reference point for key buildings with information, links and photographs. Currently, I have 3 archi-maps in progress including, Manchester, Cheesden Industrial Valley and the timber framed buildings of Levenham.

To download these maps and to find out how to view them
go here

The latest addition to the Manchester archi-map is the Beetham/ Hilton tower by Ian Simpson Architects completion 2006. You can view its location and access photographs and information about the tallest residential building in Europe.

The Manchester archi-map also has buildings dated into the century that they were built - so that you can view various periods of construction in isolation by clicking on each century folder.

ARCHITECTURE WEEK - GET INVOLVED!

Beetham/Hilton Tower (Ian Simpson Architects) and GMEX Manchester, UK.

There are tonnes of events all over the UK which you can get involved with.

There is even an official
architecture week website which has an extensive list of events themed under location.

You can even access
podwalks on the site (but they are a little London biased) - where you can download audio commentary on various architectural themes and tours - more of these please!. These are a great introduction to international visitors.

Another exceptional site with a whole rack of news and events can be found at the
Architecture Centre Network.

Here's what happens when you enter 'architecture uk' into my image search engine

ARCHITECTURE WEEK: PICCADILLY HDR

This is another favourite of mine - taken from a high level. Piccadilly in Manchester has recently undergone a makeover and I'm not sure whether it works but the composition here sets the hierarchy of the city centre towards the Victorian Spire of the remarkable Gothic Town Hall by Victorian architect Waterhouse.

The photograph was taken using
HDR (High Dynamic Range)

The building at the bottom left is the
screen by Tadao Ando .

Architecture Week - Saint Mary's Studley UK

Today marks the beginning of architecture week in the UK. I'm predominantly an architectural photographer so I thought that I would celebrate the week with a series of images which I just simply love.

I do have an upshot tick - ie I just love to take wide angled shots of architectural detail and this one is no exception. This is a beautiful church which is now desanctified and in the hands of English Heritage. It was built at a huge cost and no expense spared for the 1st Marquess and Marchioness of Ripon as a memorial to their son who was murdered whilst on a tour of Europe. The architect was William Burges a remarkably eccentric Victorian architect. All over the interior he has left signs of his presence such as carved mice and birds.

Go see at the Fountains Abbey World Heritage Site. An average church cost £15,000 to build at the time - this one cost £50,000. Sumptuous. This is a shot of the Chancel ceiling which is based upon a building in Padua Italy - it represents the Glory of Heaven.

Bridgewater Hall Manchester UK

Bridgewater Hall was completed in 1996 by RHWL partnership to a cost of £42million. It was Britain's first single purpose concert hall for over 50 years. It is the home of the Halle orchestra. As a part of the design process independent artists were commissioned to add to the public spaces. Here the stone sculpture in the foreground is by Kan Yasuda.

Heres more about the building on Pevsners Buildings of England site.

Beetham Tower Manchester UK

I took this image last Friday. I took along the tripod and this is always a concern as later I was apprehended by a security guard outside GMex asking me to stop taking photographs. He was polite. Apparently the land around GMex is private.

Anyway back to the photo - This building has grown on me (in more ways than one) it dominates the skyline of Manchester and is an impressive monumental sight when driving into Manchester down one of the main routes. It is the Beetham Tower; or sometimes known as the Hilton Tower at the south end of Deansgate. It was designed by Ian Simpson Architects and apparently Mr Simpson himself is to have an apartment right at the top.

The photograph is an HDR image taken on a tripod with several exposures and blended together using Photoshop's HDR merge facility.

More HDR

Here's another HDR image taken from the portico at Tatton Park in Cheshire UK. This image exemplifies just what I like about this process with the full tonal range and colour saturation. I particularly like the way it brings out the patina of the stone columns.

More HDR ....

Tatton HDR

Here is an image which has been processed using the
HDR (High Dynamic Range) technology in Photoshop. Basically it is a blending of several images which have been taken at different exposures thus giving a greater tonal range.

HDR is particularly suitable for architectural images because it brings out the patina of materials such as stone. It is quite effective and produces a remarkable image.

I am working on several HDR projects at the moment.

You can view a larger version of this image here.

Here is another image taken from the Tatton Portico of the Park in HDR
