Winter Garden Sheffield

The interior to the Winter Garden Sheffield by Pringle Richards Sharratt Architects.

From their website: "
The glazed Winter Garden is attached to the gallery and completes a series of covered public spaces in the middle of Sheffield. It forms a focal point linking the Civic, Arts and University quarters of the city. It is a spectacular glazed space, 22 metres wide and 22 metres high and is an important amenity for the public in the town centre. It is landscaped with extensive planting and forms a covered public garden. It opened to the public in December 2002"

Building Conservation Portal (Beta)

Just to let you know of my latest escapade online - fotofacade's Building Conservation Portal (beta) - for images, commentary and links for the historic environment. It's in beta format at the moment - but there's tonnes of free information and advice including a whole raft of themed images on building conservation to view for free. I'm adding links daily as I come across them including fresh image content as its taken.

It has been built on the remarkable web 2.0 protopage platform - thanks to them for a great idea. This gives the pages flexibility for the user - ie in moving stuff around to suit you. Go to my site and try it!

For the future I'm going to add themed pages e.g the use of lime in conservation etc.

If your a conservation officer, architect or surveyor - or indeed a homeowner with a project - then this site is ideal. It also includes links to my del.icio.us account for conservation. Photo editors with projects about the historic environment can find stock photography to suit most situations.

Here's a brief example of links to images you can find on the site

REVISITED: LIME'S FINE

The above image shows a photo I took of Lime plaster at Kilpeck Herefordshire.

Around about September 2001 I was taking my post graduate diploma in Building Conservation at the College of Estate Management in Reading, UK
.

One of the most memorable occasions was the Lime Day at Sherborne Estate (National Trust) Gloucestershire. It was hosted by Rory Young an expert in the use of lime renders and decorative plaster. One of his projects was the new Millenium Ceiling at Wilbury Park in Wiltshire
commissioned by Miranda, Countess of Iveagh.

It was at this event that I learn't about the remarkable qualities of Lime mortar
. In most applications it is far superior to modern cement mortar (but admittedly is a little more complex to mix and apply). With regards to historic building refurbishment and renovation it is almost always that Lime Mortar is recommended for use where required. There are a number of reasons for this. Firstly, older buildings are often built without wall cavities, and for centuries have relied upon the porous qualities of stone, brick and lime render to help aid evaporation of dampness.

Concrete mortars added later to historic buildings have had the effect of forming a waterproof shield which traps moisture within the walls and causes rising damp and mould growth. Lime mortar therefore, has a wicking effect. It also is softer than modern cement mortars and is able to move with time. Lime mortars used in the construction of Durham Cathedral enabled the slow evolutionary settlement of the massive piers over a period of 20 years until the structure found its own level. Lime mortar is also self leaching. Over time with the effects of rainwater travelling down its surface it is self - healing. Over time Lime mortars take on a beautiful natural ochre colour.

Now Lime Mortars are even being discussed for use in Newbuild. Ian Pritchett takes up the argument in this article

Miracoli, Venice

I have been reviewing my Venice stock images today, and I came across this image from the facade of Santa Maria dei Miracoli built 1489 to 1491 by Pietro Lombardo Cannaregio.

It reminds me of the Opus Sectile floor (click below) I have been photographing at Bury Parish Church.

Modern Magic?

The Hexagon Tower Blackley is a supreme example of C20th modern architecture fulfilling its purpose and also providing a visual treat.

It is a beautiful building and it's form changes as the light changes over the day and over the seasons.

Built in the 1970's, at a time when most structures were being attributed the 'brutally modernist' tag, and subsequently have been derided as the worst examples of British architecture.

Well, things might be changing. In his Guardian 'Arts Feature', Steve Rose writes about the Brunswick Centre, Bloomsbury, London. It seems that the modern monster shall go to the ball with a magical touch of paint from the fairy god mother... read on....

To complement this, here is an excellent YouTube video by PeoplesPalace which shows a whole host of buildings which are currently regarded as 'out of style'.

More Mosaic

Remarkable it is - the texture and colour of the floor at Bury Parish Church, Lancashire UK. What time, skill and effort must have gone into this rich tapestry of tesselation. Stood, hunched over the viewfinder of my camera, it has a hypnotic, kaleidoscopic effect which leaves me tired but remarkably content.

Charles II Court Cupboard

Tabblo: Charles II Court Cupboard

Click the image above to see the whole series

I came across this beautiful C17th Court Cupboard whilst photographing the interior of Bury Parish Church. It's a beautiful piece of workmanship with exquisite carving and guilloche patterning typical of the period. I just love the butterfly hinges which have remained there since they were nailed into place almost 400 years ago. It's hard to believe, but the cupboard is a contemporary of Samuel Pepys. It's great to get to touch and photograph history like that.

MOSAIC

Click on the image above to view the full tabblo

Wow this was a difficult job to take - what with several light sources, tungsten lighting and the clerestory windows covered with a yellow film.

It meant I had to use a little flash to remove as much shadow from the tripod legs as possible.
The site is Bury Parish Church UK. You may have seem some of my other Tabblo's of the church interior. The floor is apparently by Minton - but there is some debate about this.

RIBA STIRLING PRIZE

Image courtesy of worldarchitecturenews.com. Photo by Paul Tyagi

It is very rare that you get the full spectrum of architectural processes into one building - but this one, I believe, has pretty much most of them.

Designed from the ground up around the family and using children and their families along the full design process, this building is a remarkable example of 'fit for purpose'.

It revolutionises not only the concept for children's hospital but also for hospital's in general.

The Evelina Children's hospital by Hopkins Architects would therefore be a worthy winner of the RIBA Stirling Prize (The Architectural Oscars) on October 14th.

See the video of the building and check it out yourself on the Hopkins website - go to the projects link

JOIN THE WEB 2.0 REVOLUTION

I have over 400 links in my fotofacade del.icio.us account, and I'm adding them every day. Del.icou.us is a web 2 concept which allows the collation of web information and encourages the subsequent sharing of such knowledge.

To make things easier I have bundled items under architectural themes. For, example (see above) all links I come accross related to a particular architect I add to the architects bundle. If you go to the account and click on an architects name you might find a variety of links, which might include biogs, video and photographs relating to the architect.

If you join del.icio.us or are already a member you can add me to your network which means that you will have a live view of when my architectural links are added, or you can start up your own collection and add my knowledge to yours.

All the links are added as I carry out research behind my photographic commissions or projects so the sites do get a thorough review and have added value.

Join the social web 2 revolution - keep architecture and photography at the forefront and check out my del.icio.us presence.

Beverley Minster

Tabblo: Beverley Minster

Beverley Minster, Yorkshire UK, is one of the most remarkable medieval buildings in Europe. Beverley is one of the most underestimated towns in Europe.

Both internally and externally the views and vista's are spectacular. What is pleasing, is the willingess to provide continuity in terms of artistic input; thus we have a contemporary piece of stained glass set into a medieval frame.

Tabblo: ArchiBling: Saint Mary's Bury Lancashire

By far the most popular images on my Tabblo site are the ones of Bury Parish Church - they seem to be competing well with other more 'popular' subjects by other Tabbloer's.

Currently I have produced a series of 4 tabblo's on this remarkable church with the sumptuous interior which had some of the most influential designers and manufacturers of the Victorian era contribute to its interior splendour. Here they are:

Bury Parish Church 1

Bury Parish Church 2

Bury Parish Church 3

Bury Parish Church 4

By the way, the most popular of all 4 by far is Bury Parish Church 2.

Stained Glass

Stained glass is often overlooked as an art form. I tend to look at it from three levels;firstly I look at the subject matter and try to establish what story is trying to be told; secondly I try and find out who the manufacturer was and thirdly (most uniquely); I check out its visual impact - its luxurious glow, the changing hues and patterns as the light and seasons develop.

This is the most remarkable thing about stained glass - as the day changes, or depending on the time of year, the impact for the same piece of stained glass can be completely different.

As a photographer light is important and with things all translucent a little bit tricky. With a fixed item such as a statue I can turn up each day with camera in hand and take the shot with more or less the same exposure. With the glass it's different - and any tentative use of automatic exposure would normally fail. I normally fly against the wind and reduce the exposure by 1 stop and bring out the brightness and detail in photoshop. With glass on the north side I might increase exposure by 1/2 stop.

I particularly enjoy using the 500mm lens to get up into the heights of a building and bring down the detail which people would not normally see.

At Bury Parish Church, (where I have been photographing over the last few weeks) there is a wonderfull collection of evocative stained glass in the Nave based upon stories from the Old Testament (see image above). It is a remarkably complete set by Clayton and Bell who were prolific stained glass artists during the mid to late Victorian period.

Here's a tabblo I put together of some of the images of the stained glass including one by Kempe (can you guess which one ?)
