Winter Garden Sheffield

The interior to the Winter Garden Sheffield by Pringle Richards Sharratt Architects.

From their website: "
The glazed Winter Garden is attached to the gallery and completes a series of covered public spaces in the middle of Sheffield. It forms a focal point linking the Civic, Arts and University quarters of the city. It is a spectacular glazed space, 22 metres wide and 22 metres high and is an important amenity for the public in the town centre. It is landscaped with extensive planting and forms a covered public garden. It opened to the public in December 2002"

Darnall Crucible Steel Works

On Saturday I visited the Darnall Crucible Steel Works which was organised by Ray Wilson as part of a SPAB visit. The site, where crucible steel was produced, is now a Scheduled Ancient Monument. I have put together a microsite here with more information and access to photo's and links.

Below is a tabblo photostory of the days visit. Click on the image to get a larger view.

PS. Thanks to Sue for the lift into Sheffield!

Sheffield

I sold this photo last week on my stock site. Sheffield is in the north of England and was centre of the steel industry up until the end of the C20th. What is remarkable about Sheffield is that it has single handedly re-invented itself with the regeneration of an urban space outside the existing Town Hall. The space consists of the award winning Peace Gardens (this shot is taken from there) and the Winter Garden (large glass structure in background). The Winter Garden is apparently one of the largest inner city glass structures in Europe.
