North City Library Community Project

I tried to introduce a bit of deliberate symbolism here. I get the impression that the building is infusing energy into the book shelf and subsequently the cultural outreach in an inner city area.

Yesterday, I was invited along to join in the fun at the North City Library Community Photography Project and it was great to mix with others and see how they interpreted the building. All the Manchester flickrites should check out the next event and try and get along to photograph this wonderful building which has helped regenerate the Harpurhey area - more about the future events at the 'I Love North City Library' pool.

HDR Imagery

If you are looking for an image with a high dynamic range to show of your building then there's nothing better than a shot of your building processed under hdr. It adds vibrance and the full light and tonal range - to make your building stand out from the crowd. The above shot is from some apartments at the Spinningfields development in Manchester UK (click for larger image).

Here is a slideshow on flickr of more of my hdr images

RIBA STIRLING PRIZE

Image courtesy of worldarchitecturenews.com. Photo by Paul Tyagi

It is very rare that you get the full spectrum of architectural processes into one building - but this one, I believe, has pretty much most of them.

Designed from the ground up around the family and using children and their families along the full design process, this building is a remarkable example of 'fit for purpose'.

It revolutionises not only the concept for children's hospital but also for hospital's in general.

The Evelina Children's hospital by Hopkins Architects would therefore be a worthy winner of the RIBA Stirling Prize (The Architectural Oscars) on October 14th.

See the video of the building and check it out yourself on the Hopkins website - go to the projects link

The Colour of Light

My latest book review on LibraryThing is Tadao Ando, The Colour of Light by Richard Pare

This book is as much about the photography than the architecture. Richard Pare is a UK photographer with a deep insight into Ando's work. His photograph's pick up on Ando's penchant for the abstract and turns minimalist concrete structures into things of beauty.

Conceptual Facade

Deansgate Manchester UK

This is another sale to a professional business this week. Some of the keywords behind the image may have helped including dynamic, rooted, professional, historic, progress, timescale. It's remarkable what a simple photo can convey. It's equally remarkable what the contrast between two structures can communicate. Here the contrast works because of style, material, colour and scale.

Our built environment is constantly switched on and we are more often than not subconsciously switched on to it. The messages it conveys are endless.

Who said that architecture didn't speak to us?

Out at Work

Downtown in Manchester UK today to photograph the up and coming Northern Quarter which was once home to the rag trade but is now a receptacle for bright and contemporary architecture cross referenced with the worlds best of Victorian warehouse architecture.
Also photographed the Mancat College in Harpurhey to satiate my current fetish for all things contemporary and all things Bauhaus;)
The photo is of the recently completed Shudehill Interchange (see photo above) by Ian Simpson Architects

What I'm Reading....

An image I took in 2003 of Oxford University Museum of Natural History by Benjamin Woodward completed in 1860 an iconic building in the Gothic Revival.

THE GOTHIC REVIVAL by Michael J. Lewis, Thames and Hudson, London

A good solid backgrounder to the increasingly complex world of C18th and C19th architecture. I'm particularly interested in the High Victorian period and its development from Pugin and Ruskin through to Scott, Butterworth and Street.

Miniquote: "The Gothic Revival is more than a fashion craze for pointed arches and pinnacles. During its years of greatest influence, it subjected every aspect of art, belief, society and labour to intense intellectual scrutiny, using the Middle Ages as a platform from which to judge the modern world".

The Beetham/ Hilton Tower by Ian Simpson Architects, Manchester

MANCHESTER: SHAPING THE CITY, RIBA, London

A superb book on the latest contemporary architecture in one of the most vibrant and fast moving cities in the world. I hardly dare miss a week in Manchester because things are changing so quickly. This book takes a pause and looks at enterprises such as the Beetham Hilton Tower and the regeneration of the Northern Quarter. Excellent format and clean and crisp photography.

Miniquote: "This book celebrates the major redevelopment and regeneration work that has, and continues to be undertakin in the city. It:
  • identifies the drivers for change in the renaissance of contemporary Manchester following its evolution from Georgian/ Victorian times;
  • explores the depth and complexity of the public-private partnerships involved in the delivery of structures and their achievements;
  • articulates the importance of urban design for successful regeneration"

ARCHITECTURE WEEK: PICCADILLY HDR

This is another favourite of mine - taken from a high level. Piccadilly in Manchester has recently undergone a makeover and I'm not sure whether it works but the composition here sets the hierarchy of the city centre towards the Victorian Spire of the remarkable Gothic Town Hall by Victorian architect Waterhouse.

The photograph was taken using
HDR (High Dynamic Range)

The building at the bottom left is the
screen by Tadao Ando .

Saint Ann's and the Beetham Tower

Here is a photo of contrasts with the C18th tower of Saint Ann's in Manchester UK (which originally dominated the skyline of Manchester) and the massive bulk of the recently completed Beetham Tower (which now dominates the skyline of Manchester, Salford, and surrounding districts).
