This beautiful building by Sansovino built in the local Istrian stone can, when contemplated from the ground, be read like a music sheet.

Pattern and Decoration

Sometimes, I get caught up in the sheer wonderment of pattern and decoration in buildings.

Both are key elements in how a building is expressed to the observer. Without it our buildings would be just mundane backdrops to our lives.

Buildings are decorated in a myriad of ways. Pattern and decoration can reveal the sheer virtuosity of the designer, or encompass the message within the structure. Repetition of a material, or colour or form can enhance and reinforce a message or a feeling. Soft and circular patterns can convey a feeling of grace and comfort, whilst sharp and angular patterns can relate to domination and danger (think about the masculine strength of the Romanesque chevron)

All styles of architecture have used pattern and decoration to express their raison d'etre.

Here is a slideshow of my Pattern and Decoration set on flickr to give some examples.

For the designers amongst you check out my SWATCH SET

Most of all, ENJOY!

Charles II Court Cupboard

Tabblo: Charles II Court Cupboard

Click the image above to see the whole series

I came across this beautiful C17th Court Cupboard whilst photographing the interior of Bury Parish Church. It's a beautiful piece of workmanship with exquisite carving and guilloche patterning typical of the period. I just love the butterfly hinges which have remained there since they were nailed into place almost 400 years ago. It's hard to believe, but the cupboard is a contemporary of Samuel Pepys. It's great to get to touch and photograph history like that.

More HDR

Here's another HDR image taken from the portico at Tatton Park in Cheshire UK. This image exemplifies just what I like about this process with the full tonal range and colour saturation. I particularly like the way it brings out the patina of the stone columns.

Tatton HDR

Here is an image which has been processed using the
HDR (High Dynamic Range) technology in Photoshop. Basically it is a blending of several images which have been taken at different exposures thus giving a greater tonal range.

HDR is particularly suitable for architectural images because it brings out the patina of materials such as stone. It is quite effective and produces a remarkable image.

I am working on several HDR projects at the moment.

You can view a larger version of this image here.

Here is another image taken from the Tatton Portico of the Park in HDR

Ionic Capital

I have been involved with a Heritage Skills Weekend at Fountain's Abbey in Yorkshire UK, where traditional skills have been on display.

Here is a classical Ionic capital (upside down)perfectly crafted from a block of stone by a particularly gifted young pupil from York College. It's a remarkable piece of work and it's great to see some of our skills and crafts are being passed on to younger generations.

Arc de Triomphe 2

The weather wasn't too much and perhaps this is why I took this shot of an iconic landmark. This structure is so huge it is hard to convey - I do believe that it is the biggest triumphal arch in the world.

IONIC ORDER - Style of classical column capital with volutes originating in Asia minor in the mid C6th. Here used at Heaton Hall Manchester by James Wyatt in 1772. Here the capitals are a very early example of the use of Coade Stone.
