Masonic Intrigue (Part 1)

Built upon the proportions of Solomon's Temple?

Falinge is a small district of Rochdale, Lancashire which lies just outside the town centre. It has recently acquired the dubious mantle of ‘Benefits Capital of the UK’, which brought swiftly upon the concrete laden streets, the vagaries of national press attention. Just 50 metres away from this hotbed of scrutiny was a photographer with an entirely different subject framed within his lens.

The exterior geometry only hints at the symbolic wonders within

Andy Marshall explains: “ I am a photographer with a background in historic architecture and its conservation, and every now and again I get a call to help record a building which is under threat. On this occasion the building was the church of Saint Edmund in Falinge.”

Unconventional tracery at the Royd's Chapel

Andy is getting particularly used to photographing churches which are under threat, but this church overwhelmed him with the sheer quality, individuality and distinctiveness of its interior.

More symbols in the form of vine scroll, acorn and oak leaf motif's

“I remember first meeting the key holder there and discussing the history of the building as we entered the vestry. When we walked into the chancel I soon realised that Saint Edmund wasn’t the average Victorian church. I remember having to hold my excitement until I had the pleasure of being all alone in this remarkable space”.

Great to see a contemporary slant on this Gargoyle at Chichester Cathedral UK. It just goes to show that the organic tradition of cathedral building is alive and well and that the C20th is well represented!

An ethereal shot of Manchester Cathedral UK

Yup, I did some post processing here - but I deliberately wanted to create an atmosphere. The cathedral was shrouded in fog and there was a strong backlighting from a street light. I was heavily influenced by the b&w film Nosferatu and this image fits the bill!

Pattern and Decoration

Sometimes, I get caught up in the sheer wonderment of pattern and decoration in buildings.

Both are key elements in how a building is expressed to the observer. Without it our buildings would be just mundane backdrops to our lives.

Buildings are decorated in a myriad of ways. Pattern and decoration can reveal the sheer virtuosity of the designer, or encompass the message within the structure. Repetition of a material, or colour or form can enhance and reinforce a message or a feeling. Soft and circular patterns can convey a feeling of grace and comfort, whilst sharp and angular patterns can relate to domination and danger (think about the masculine strength of the Romanesque chevron)

All styles of architecture have used pattern and decoration to express their raison d'etre.

Here is a slideshow of my Pattern and Decoration set on flickr to give some examples.

Most of all, ENJOY!

Gothic Door

Gothic Door, originally uploaded by fotofacade.

The thumbnail is better than the full pic - I started off in Copic's and then ran out of ink - but had just got into the zone - and had to finish it - so I pulled out my ancient watercolours and had a go with them. I am not pleased with the end result. Changing over mediums is like changing over from driving a truck to driving a car - you have to get used to it.

However, I always learn a lot from sketching and painting architecture - it helps feed my understanding and ultimately better informs my photography

Gargoyle at Saint Severin Paris France

This is a wonderful church in the Latin Quarter of Paris. I managed to catch the light just right for this pic and then later produced a high dynamic range image via photoshop to give it a more sinister feel.

The oft rubbed bosom of Marie Antoinette

The oft rubbed bosom of Marie Antoinette

I don't know whether it is good look in France to rub a statue's bosom - but the monument to Marie Antoinette has received ahem.. a lot of attention in certain areas.

Here at the fantastic Gothic superstructure Saint Denis Basilica Paris, home to the Kings and Queens of France.

The Ark of the Covenant?

Genius Loci

Best Viewed Large

Back in the Basilica at Saint Denis, I soon found myself in the crypt which has a Byzantine feel. Whilst walking around the many chapels cut into the apse I came across this little marvel. Something faintly Da Vinci Code about it. Here is a hunk of stone with a vine motif roughly carved upon it and the tool marks of the originator cut deeply into the patina. How old is this? Dare I say Roman? Whatever it's age - the reverence given to it and it's marvellous location certainly made it look and feel special. I felt for a fleeting moment that I was seeing something of the person that created it many hundreds of years ago. Not many subjects get the Andy Marshall top third and floor perspective shot - but this deserves it. A work of art.

The White Hot Act of Gothic

The White Hot Act of Gothic

So here it is - the origins of Gothic - and I had to get in on the act! That's me having laid out the camera with timer onto the floor and nervously holding my Billingham Bag in awe of being at the birthplace of Gothic......

Pevsner says "Whoever designed the choir at St Denis, one can safely say, invented the Gothic style...the pointed arch, the flying buttress, and the rib-vault....What was decisively new....was the combination of these motifs for a new aesthetic purpose. (Pevsner, An Outline of European Architecture, Penquin, London 1943)

Rood Screen

Rood Screen Detail

I went to Holy Trinity, Skipton last week and spent a wonderful day photographing the 'top end' of the church including the Rood Screen.

Made in the early C16th the angel carvings originally were located in front of the uprights which held the Rood Loft (a sort of minstrel's gallery) above the screen (now removed).

The Rose Window

The Rose Window

Over the Christmas period I went over to Beverley and was lucky enough to get up into the roof of the South and North Transept of Beverley Minster. Built in the C13th, it was remarkable to see the other unadorned side of the building, including some original timbers with carpenters marks on them. This photo is behind the Rose Window on the South Transept.
