Arc de Triomphe 2

The weather wasn't too much and perhaps this is why I took this shot of an iconic landmark. This structure is so huge it is hard to convey - I do believe that it is the biggest triumphal arch in the world.

Arc de Triomphe

Shell like the spiral staircase rises ever upwards inside the Arc de Triomphe. It is a marvel in itself with a geometrical symmetry that borders on the golden mean.

Tuschinski Theatre

This photo of the Tuschinski Theatre Amsterdam Netherlands, was a recent sale for me in a UK National Newspaper. Built in the 1920's the exterior is a strange amalgamation of sinewy Gothic and amorphous Art Deco. It was built by Jewish entrepreneur Abraham Tuschinski who later died in the Nazi concentration camps in the second world war with most of his family. It is a poignant memorial to a remarkable man who started life as a tailor and ended up creating a movie theatre empire. Further to restoration in 2002 it is now open and if your in Amsterdam you can go and book a movie here and experience a remarkable building both inside and out.

Happy Anniversary!

Charlotte and I got married 12 months ago to this day in one of the most romantic (and er.. ahem... architecturally significant) locations on earth - Venice.

After the grand occasion at the Palazzo Cavelli we had lunch in a simple trattoria around the corner. For starter's we had Champagne and Parma Ham with oven baked aubergine. It's a taste I will never forget. At the ceremony, in typical Italian style, we had to vow to live up to Italian beliefs and bring our children up in the Italian way - no problem.

Charlotte's Mum and Dad and my Mum and Dad came along aswell as Sam and Emmy.

I said to Charlotte's Mum that it was Italian tradition that once married, the groom had to throw the Mother In Law into the Grand Canal - but she was having none of it;)

Tonight we celebrate with an Italian extravaganze - with champagne, parma ham, aubergines and much much more.....

Behind the photo....

The Pantheon (Latin Quarter) in Paris is perhaps one of the most easily recognisable buildings in Paris other than the Arc de Triomphe and the ubiquitous Eiffel. It's a place that I just have to keep going back to because it has so much historical and spacial character. The spaces and buildings around tip their cap to the large domed behemoth, with a spacial hierarchy that channels views upwards and towards the structure whilst surrounding buildings respectfully keep their distance. To the east (I think) Rue Cardinal Lemoine hooks up via a beautiful but lightly formed square (I have the picture on my wall) with the Rue Mouffetard; which is a hub of activity, with the hustle and bustle of the market stretching for over a mile down the gentle gradient.
The Pantheon from the Jardin du Luxembourg
Back to the Place du Pantheon there is also a wonderful church in the north east corner. It is called St. Etienne du Mont and it has a curious welding of Gothic nave with a classical Baroque west front.
Saint Etienne du Mont
Now to the picture. Just opposite Saint Etienne du Mont there is a little English Pub called the Bombadier. On a beautiful day early in the Spring a couple of years ago my Dad and I had a costly couple of pints whilst watching the Rugby, and afterwards whilst standing on the grand steps of the Pantheon under the enormous Portico all that feng shui, architectural gusto and spacial heirarchy (and a couple of lagers) enthused my Dad to proclaim that 'This is the best day of my life'. Considering that Dad only says such things several times a year, it was a relatively rare event, and one that will make sure that I will be back amongst the curtilage of Pantheon, Le Mont, Lemoine, Mouffetard and Bombadier once again.

ARCHIPEDIA - B is for....

Baluster: a column, often in classical style, supporting the hand rail to stairs or, in the case of the photograph above, to the eaves of Andreas Palladios Basilica in the Piazza Vicenza Italy. A series of such columns is known as a Balustrade

BEHIND THE PHOTO....

Well it's that time of week again. Every Wednesday I will be looking in depth at the technical, emotional, etc background to one of my photos. Today it is more on the emotional side. This image was taken in Venice in February 2005. It is on the Piazzetta San Marco outside the Doge's Palace. This photo was taken on the day before I got married at the Palazzo Cavelli on the Grand Canal. I found the process leading up to such an important event invigorating and the subject of my photography changed from one of abstract architecture to that of people and the associated hustle and bustle. This picture holds more than a memory for me then, with the sun slowly setting over the Zecca. It has a comfort and warmth which is calming and soothing - just what one needs on the night before the wedding. Stag Night? - just a quiet drink at Harry's Bar sufficed.

Feeling a little drained, artistic inspiration on the wane? Shoot into the sun my friend, shoot into the sun...

Purely Palladio

Here is the man himself. The statue of Palladio in Piazza Palladio Vicenza (his home town). The Basilica behind was one of Palladio's first commissions. Vicenza is a remarkable place with an unbelievable classical heritage. I visited in February 2005 during my honeymoon and I managed to get a couple of architectural shots before being reigned in by my wife Charlotte!

It seems that romance won the day as you might tell with this image I took in the afternoon sunlight.
