MANCAT Campus Harpurhey

Here is a short slideshow of the MANCAT Campus, Harpurhey near Manchester by Walker Simpson Architects. The photo's were taken last week. It was completed in 2006 at a cost of 7.1m.

In my opinion, in some areas, it bears a resemblance to the Bauhaus building in Dessau. See earlier posts.

Hexagon Tower, Blackley Manchester

The Hexagon Tower Blackley Manchester is a beautifully crafted building. It was built by Richard Seifert and Partners for the chemical company ICI in 1971. I took the photographs last week and have put them into the slideshow below. Click the play button twice to view.

Out at Work

Downtown in Manchester UK today to photograph the up and coming Northern Quarter which was once home to the rag trade but is now a receptacle for bright and contemporary architecture cross referenced with the worlds best of Victorian warehouse architecture.
Also photographed the Mancat College in Harpurhey to satiate my current fetish for all things contemporary and all things Bauhaus;)
The photo is of the recently completed Shudehill Interchange (see photo above) by Ian Simpson Architects

The Bauhaus, Dessau

Below is a video linked from Google Video. It is of the Bauhaus at Dessau, Germany built in 1926 by Walter Gropius. Just click the play button (sometimes you need to do it twice) and enjoy. Its 27mins long and there are some breathtaking shots of this beautiful building. Thanks to The East Coast Architectural Review for spotting this one.

I'm sure that the striking £7.1m Mancat College in Harpurhey (2006) by Walker Simpson Architects has its genus in the Bauhaus building at Dessau.

Mapping The Historic Environment

Above is a photo I took in Lavenham, Suffolk UK in 2005. I have compiled a series of images and geo-referenced them on an archimap which can be viewed with the free google earth download. Lavenham is a wonderful example of a medieval wool town with a whole rack of timber framed buildings. I have geo-referenced them on the archimap.

It is a wonderful way to view architecture. You can download the map for free here. There is also a Manchester map and a Cheesden Industrial Valley Map.
Curiously in the Lavenham archimap I have highlighted a site which looks potentially archaeological. What do you think?

Dusk at Rievaulx

My stay at the Abbey Cottage Rievaulx resulted in a few photographs of the Abbey itself and this photo taken at dusk it my favourite. It was a pretty scary exercise because I had taken my daughter Emily along and she was a little spooked as we stood waiting for a 10 minute exposure in the skeletal ruins of the nave. Needless to say we beat a hasty retreat as we heard strange noises and witnessed movement in the shadows....

What I'm Reading....

An image I took in 2003 of Oxford University Museum of Natural History by Benjamin Woodward completed in 1860 an iconic building in the Gothic Revival.

THE GOTHIC REVIVAL by Michael J. Lewis, Thames and Hudson, London

A good solid backgrounder to the increasingly complex world of C18th and C19th architecture. I'm particularly interested in the High Victorian period and its development from Pugin and Ruskin through to Scott, Butterworth and Street.

Miniquote: "The Gothic Revival is more than a fashion craze for pointed arches and pinnacles. During its years of greatest influence, it subjected every aspect of art, belief, society and labour to intense intellectual scrutiny, using the Middle Ages as a platform from which to judge the modern world".

The Beetham/ Hilton Tower by Ian Simpson Architects, Manchester

MANCHESTER: SHAPING THE CITY, RIBA, London

A superb book on the latest contemporary architecture in one of the most vibrant and fast moving cities in the world. I hardly dare miss a week in Manchester because things are changing so quickly. This book takes a pause and looks at enterprises such as the Beetham Hilton Tower and the regeneration of the Northern Quarter. Excellent format and clean and crisp photography.

Miniquote: "This book celebrates the major redevelopment and regeneration work that has, and continues to be undertakin in the city. It:
  • identifies the drivers for change in the renaissance of contemporary Manchester following its evolution from Georgian/ Victorian times;
  • explores the depth and complexity of the public-private partnerships involved in the delivery of structures and their achievements;
  • articulates the importance of urban design for successful regeneration"

Trinity Bridge Salford and Manchester UK

Trinity Bridge was one of the early sparks towards regeneration along the River Irwell - it bridges the border between Manchester and Salford and was built by the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava in 1995.

To me, Bridges are key indicators of a particular age in terms of stylistic intent. They are the backbone of architectural evolution of style, both influencing and reflecting the style and intent of the day - much the same as
chair design has been used by architects to influence, display and develop ideas of form and style.

Rievaulx Sketch

I spent much of last week over at Rievaulx, Yorkshire. The Abbey (which is looked after by English Heritage) consists of the substantial remains of a Cistercian religious complex initiated in the C12th and which grew organically over a further 300 years until the dissolution of the monastries.

Part work, part play I spent the time in Abbey Cottage which is let out by English Heritage.

The Abbey remains are remarkable, even more breathtaking is the valley that they reside in. There is a harmonious whole to the site of ochre yellow limestone rising out of the steep sided valley. It is difficult to compare Rievaulx with
Fountain's Abbey (which is close by).

Whilst Fountain's is remarkable in the breadth of what survives I think that Rievaulx tops the league in terms of natural setting and epic backdrop, views and vistas.

The photograph is of Sam my son who looks to be hard at work sketching the ruins, but in reality he'd found a hotspot which gave him 1 bar on his mobile phone and he wasn't budging until he'd received all his texts from friends.

More images of Rievaulx over the next few days....
