Paley and Austin and the Pelican

Pelican, originally uploaded by fotofacade.

Taken with a Canon 5D, manfrotto tripod with geared head, sigma lens.

There's something deeply moving about the Pelican symbol used throughout Christianity. But for me it goes beyond the religious sense of sacrifice. I suppose it's a common understanding any parent would have in protecting and nourishing their own.

And this is how it is for me with my architectural photography. On many levels it is a personal experience drawn to symbols, messages, textures, colours, spaces and structures which touch me.

Here the Pelican is a symbol of Christ - it is feeding its young with its own flesh. More here on the Pelican in Christianity.

The Choir stalls are from Saint Mary the Virgin in Bury Lancashire - a remarkable example of Victorian architecture. Take a look at my flickr set here on this church.

The stalls were designed by Paley and Austin - more here

My most popular image on Flickr

Organ staircase Saint Mary's Studley Royal, Yorkshire UK, originally uploaded by fotofacade.

The photo was taken on a manfrotto tripod with a canon 5d and sigma 12mm lens. It was post processed in photoshop and photomatix

I must admit that I am surprised at this pic being my most popular image on flickr. It's had around 1800 views to date and favourited 155 times. What is it about the pic which makes it so popular?

Is it the subject matter - the organ staircase of a church? - doubt it

Is it the unusual angle, or the geometric pattern? - maybe

Is it the hdr post processing? - maybe

One thing for sure we are all drawn to the things around us by their shape, colour and texture. Architectural subjects are the same and they have an effect upon us.

Architects use this all the time.

I call this the genius loci of architecture, the intangible bits which effect how we feel about our environment.

Here is a flickr group I set up with images that show a bit of that old genius loci

Descent into Hardwick

Descent into Hardwick, originally uploaded by fotofacade.

This is part of the original oak staircase (1590's) leading up to the top of the north east tower at Hardwick. The water pump is C20th ;-). Hardwick Hall is in Derbyshire UK and is open to the public - it is a unique example of English Renaissance architecture by the architect Robert Smythson.

New Scroll Hardwick Hall

New Scroll Hardwick Hall, originally uploaded by fotofacade.

Upon a recent visit to Hardwick Hall I had the pleasure of joining some stone masons hard at work completing the refurbishment of the south east tower. Here is a scroll detail which belongs to the Elizabethan strapwork on the tower. They were busy washing down the lime mortar pointing to give it a smooth sheen.

Here is a rare view from the roof of Hardwick Hall in Derbyshire. Dominated by the stone hewn Arms of Bess, Countess of Shrewsbury on the new Hall built in the 1590's. The ruins of Hardwick Old Hall in the distance perform a romantic interlude as you gaze into the distance....... ;-)

Art Deco Eagle, Sunlight House

Art Deco Eagle, Sunlight House, originally uploaded by fotofacade.

Sunlight House heralded the arrival of the modern movement in the town. It was the highest commercial building in Manchester when it was built in 1932 by Joseph Sunlight - the first building to be higher than the Town Hall.

Has a swimming pool in the basement which was opened by Douglas Fairbanks

Another pic of this lovely building here www.flickr.com/photos/fotofacade/455672945/

Hilton/Gmex Manchester

Hilton/Gmex Manchester, originally uploaded by fotofacade.

I just love using the zoom lens to bring architectural subjects closer together. Here we have the curved profile of the Victorian G Mex roof and the angular profile and straight lines of the recently completed Hilton/ Beetham tower, Manchester UK.

I have also introduced a subtle variation between the two buildings via layers in photoshop. I added a warm filter to the G Mex building and a cold filter to the Hilton Tower
