The George Pace Project
1. Former South Aisle now Nave of Saint Martin-Le-Grand, York UK, 2. Exuberant cames by George Pace at Selby Abbey, 3. Saint Martin Le Grand York, 4. Saint Martin Le Grand York
George Pace is one of my all time favourite architects and I am planning on visiting a few more of his churches in the new year to photograph them.
I have set up a flickr group called 'The George Pace Project'. The aim of the group is to collate images and information about George Pace's works.
Here's a bit more about George Pace:
English Architect George Pace 1915-1975, was born in Croydon Surrey.
During his formative years he became a member of the Society of Antiquaries and won many prizes as a student including the Pugin studentship in 1937 and the RIBA Asphitel prize for the best architectural student in England.
Mackintosh was an early influence and a fellow student quoted "whilst most of the students enthused about Lloyd Wright or Gropius, George was more concerned with the ideas of William Morris, Lethaby and Burges". (taken from The Architecture of George Pace by Peter Pace, Batsford, London, 1990)
Pace, however declared a respect for Gropius whilst at the same time pursuing a passion for medieval Gothic nurtured by his childhood years drawing churches with his father.
During the early stages of his practice, Pace developed a strong relationship with the Ecclesiastical. He formed a close bond with the Dean of York Minster and through his patronage became architect to several major Cathedrals.
Pace believed strongly in the tradition of skill and craftsmanship and developed long lasting relationships with several firms.
Pace's later designs for completely new buildings were rooted in this unique mix of the modern and the conservative, the Gropius and the Morris. Added to this mix, was the belief that industrial architecture was an underestimated art form.
I believe that it is the combination of these elements which take George Pace's architecture to a new level of Gothic - beyond Lethaby but retaining it's roots (and therefore not cut off from such cultural nutrients) within that tradition.
Whilst walking around one of Pace's buildings, I am always struck by its contemporary resonance, the spatial poetics, and the symbiotic relationship with the past Gothic tradition often articulated in traditional materials, textures and methods.

Sacred
We often walk past old monuments without taking much notice - but if we stay awhile and ponder and take in what is actually being said; then we can perhaps open up a brief wormhole to the past - and in doing so - realise how close we are to our ancestors in feelings and thoughts.

Sketching
As a photographer I find that sometimes you need to understand the form and texture of a subject to get a better image. So I try and sketch as much as possible - this helps both my photography and also my knowledge of the subject. I'm not an artist - but I enjoy it all the same - Here's a slideshow of some of my sketches

Quatrefoil Angels
I took this image on Friday at Bury Parish Church - beautiful detail. It's often hard with stained glass to get all the detail and my first exposure showed good detail in the angels wings but their faces were washed out. So I stopped down and took a couple more shots. I blended the shots together in photoshop to enable us to see the angels in all their glory.
The stained glass is in the south aisle and is by prolific Victorian stained glass artists, Clayton and Bell.

Long Street Methodist Church, Edgar Wood
Long Street Methodist Church was originally known as the Wesleyan Chapel and School. It was designed in 1897 and built in 1899-1901.
The church and school are beautiful examples of the Arts and Crafts movement. They have many internal and external features which represent this unique style.
The architect was Edgar Wood who was from Middleton, and is a nationally renowned architect of the Arts and Crafts movement with an ever growing reputation.
THE ARTS AND CRAFTS MOVEMENT
The Arts and Crafts movement started in the second half of the 19th century in England and soon, (through the ideals of returning to traditional methods of craftsmanship and design), was to influence much of the Western world. It was inspired by two great men of the Victorian age, namely John Ruskin (the writer and social commentator) and William Morris (famous for his interior designs).
The Arts and Crafts movement sought to create an idyllic setting which was in opposition to the grim industrialisation of Victorian England. It looked back to the medieval period for its architectural inspiration.
No area of art or design was left untouched by the movement which heavily influenced architecture, furniture, furnishings, and even garden landscaping. Out of the movement sprang original ideas which led to the building of numerous 'garden cities'. It was also to influence the development of other styles such as Art Nouveau and Bauhaus.
In America its most famous advocate was Frank Lloyd Wright who founded the Chigaco Arts and Crafts Society.

Remarkable it is the floor at St. Mary....
I produced this image of the floor at Saint Mary the Virgin, Bury Parish Church because I wanted to get across how beautiful and unique it is. Pevsner calls it a 'tour de force'. I think it is a remarkable example of the Victorian vision and and also their will to carry out such a vision.
The aim of the pic is to draw attention to some of the aspects of our historic churches which are undervalued and undervisited. Since posting this image on flickr it has received a lot of attention and comments. I think that's great for our heritage and our churches in general. It shows that there is a 'market' of interest out there which is potential 'capital' for our historic churches. It's great to see historic church architecture combined with cutting edge web 2 services such as flickr; and this is what we need to do to keep our historic churches at the forefront.
If you're interested in the seeing more of the floor you can visit the church!
OR
Take a look at this photo essay at Tabblo which has lots of pics of the floor
OR
Take a look at my flickr photosets on the church, or the floor, or the reredos (another tour de force)
If after all that your'e fascinated with the magic of tiles and ceramics (or you'd like to find a church near you which you can visit) then you can visit the Tiles and Architectural Ceramics Society website
More on tiles and ceramics on my delicious pages
If you have a feature of your church which you think is undervalued and should have more attention then drop me a line - we might be able to feature some images.
